Simple Fireplace Makeover: Greek Revival Style

ADAPTED FROM DEBBIE TRAVIS' PAINTED HOUSE: LIVING ROOMS & DINING ROOMS

Is Your living room was uninviting ? Want to make over your uninspiring brick fireplace but your apartment is a rental? Try to do this incomplete and unexpensive overhaul but it will change the appearance of unattractive fireplace to bring life to your room.

Build a facade over the rising structure of the fireplace, one that could be easily removed when you left the apartment. The shape of the new fireplace surround is taken from Greek Revival, a typically strong architectural style that would bring much-needed energy to this room. Instead of painting the brick or covering it in plaster, build a facade over the brick using sheets of medium-density fiberboard (MDF). You will need two pieces of MDF for the sides of the fireplace and one for the front of the fireplace. The mantle was left untouched.

After adding some molding for a little detail, prime the structure and apply a golden yellow base coat. To antique the wood, wipe burnt umber water-based stain over the surface, leaving a buildup of stain behind in the corners and crevices around the molding to make it look old.

Though the fireplace was the main focus of this room, you can give the space a homey feeling to finish it off. While the deep turquoise on the walls is not an obvious first choice, it is a color that worked equally well with the canvas slip-covered sofas and the country accessories that were already being used to decorate the room

See difference before and after the make over

Arranging Furniture in Small Livingroom

Here are some ideas on how to configure your small living room if you want to add an entertainment center:

1. You'll need to place the entertainment center first (because it is the biggest piece of furniture) and then place the rest of your furniture around it. You have no other choice if you only have one wall to work with.

2. Group the furniture around the entertainment center trying different configurations. More than likely the best place for the sofa is directly opposite the TV.

3. You can angle a chair toward the TV when in use, and when not in use, angle it toward the sofa for conversation.

4. If you have room for chair on the other side of the sofa, it would help to provide a nice balance.
